What happened

Brazil's data protection authority ordered Meta to immediately stop using public posts from Brazilian Facebook and Instagram users to train its generative AI, citing an inappropriate legal basis, unclear information to users, obstacles to opting out and use of children's data. The order was lifted on 30 August 2024 after Meta agreed a compliance plan, including an easier opt-out and not using data from under-18s.
