Colombia shuts down Worldcoin's iris-scanning and orders data deleted

Order to close operations in Colombia, delete biometric (iris) data and stop collecting personal data

Company
World Foundation and Tools for Humanity (Worldcoin)
Regulator or court
Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (SIC)
Law
Law 1581 of 2012 (Colombian data protection law)
Status
Final (appeal rejected by Resolution 45710 of 18 June 2026)

What happened

Colombia's data protection authority found the Worldcoin project had collected iris scans from thousands of Colombians without valid authorisation or a clear explanation of how the data would be used. It ordered the companies to stop operating in Colombia and delete the biometric data. On appeal in June 2026 the regulator confirmed the order, rejecting the argument that encrypted 'iris codes' were no longer personal data.
