What happened

Days after DeepSeek's chatbot went viral, the Garante asked its two Chinese operating companies what data they collected, why, on what legal basis and whether it was stored in China. The companies replied that they did not operate in Italy and that EU law did not apply to them. The Garante found the answer inadequate and ordered an immediate halt to processing Italian users' data.
