What happened
After a multi-year investigation, Nigeria's consumer protection regulator found Meta and WhatsApp had imposed exploitative privacy terms on Nigerian users, including sharing data without proper consent, and fined them US$220 million. In April 2025 a specialist tribunal upheld the penalty and the regulator's power to act in data matters, though it set aside one of the orders. Separately, Nigeria's data protection commission fined Meta US$32.8 million in February 2025, a dispute the parties settled in late 2025.
